Canada didn't just open its first-ever home World Cup with a football match. It opened it with a moment.
Michael Bublé took the field at Toronto Stadium on June 12th, backed by the Sole Power Choir, and delivered a stirring cover of Sam Cooke's 1962 soul classic "Bring It On Home To Me", the final act of an opening ceremony that brought together some of the country's most iconic voices.
Dressed in all black and surrounded by 48 flag bearers representing every nation competing in the tournament, Bublé let the song build with the choir before powerfully repeating "bring it home" into the final note. For a country hosting its first-ever World Cup match on home soil, the lyric landed like a mission statement.

The ceremony itself was a star-studded reflection of Canadian identity. Alessia Cara opened proceedings with a performance of "Wild Things," while Nora Fatehi, DJ Sanjoy, and Vegedream brought energy to the official FIFA World Cup 2026 anthem "Siir." Elyanna and Jessie Reyez followed with "Illuminate" before Alanis Morissette delivered a show-stopping rendition of "O Canada." Then came Bublé, the closing act, the emotional anchor.
Not everyone online was in agreement. Some fans praised the performance as a perfect send-off for Team Canada's opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Others questioned the choice of an American song for a Canadian moment. And in a separate controversy, BBC viewers were left furious after commentators talked over the entire performance.
But for those watching live at Toronto Stadium, the moment was clear: Canada had arrived on the world's biggest stage, and it brought its voice with it.
